Jeff Hardy’s public declaration that he wants to retire CMPunk has reignited the discussion of their 2009 rivalry. Especially given CMPunk’s recent return to WWE. A final showdown between Punk and Hardy Boyz, which could end his career, is a possibility for many WWE fans, given the current partnership between WWE, TNA, and Hardy Boyz in NXT.
It was a compelling feud because the original version played off the contrasting personalities of Jeff Hardy and CM Punk. Jeff Hardy is known for high-flying stunts and an unconventional attitude, while CM Punk embodies the straight-edge life and positions himself often as morally inferior. Punk often took aim at Hardy’s past struggles with addiction, which added a personal touch to their feud.
Their rivalry revolved around the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Both competitors competed to win it on SmackDown. In a Steel Cage “Loser Leaves WWE”, Punk was victorious and Jeff Hardy was forced to leave the company.
Hardy’s desire to leave WWE was revealed to be due to his addiction issues and burnout caused by the intense WWE schedule. It is undeniable that this intense rivalry elevated the careers of both wrestlers, as it showcased their impressive in-ring ability and talent for engaging storytelling.
Alex McCarthy recently spoke with the reporter of Mail SportCM Punk responded to Hardy’s hopes. Punk was unsure of the chances for a quick match.

“He told me he was going to retire? Punk said, “I’d love to be able fly but that won’t happen anytime soon.” “I believe there have to be many bridges that are crossed. It’s hard to say how long I still have. I am all in favor of giving people a second, third or fourth chance. We don’t need to go into the details, but there are many experiences that I did not enjoy. I simply want people to be free from whatever demons they may possess. It’s good that he will be returning. We’ll see how it goes.”
CM Punk surprised everyone by returning to WWE in November 2023 at the Survivor Series WarGames. Since then, Punk has had high-profile rivalries with such stars as Drew McIntyre or Seth Rollins. On March 1, he also took part in an Elimination Chamber Match, which saw the winner earn a shot at the Undisputed WWE Championship Cody Rhodes for WrestleMania. CMPunk, unfortunately, will not be able to compete in Wrestlemania.
