Pope Francis Health Update Vatican Statement

Vatican officials released an update that stated Pope Francis’ medical condition has stabilized and his fever is subsiding, a sign of progress in his recovery. He was taken to hospital on Friday in Rome after experiencing breathing difficulties. The prescribed treatment has been successful, and he is now able to return to some of his normal activities.

Pope Francis: Background Information

Pope Francis faced repeated health issues in recent years. This includes a previous hospitalization in 2023 for pneumonia, followed by surgery on a hernia. He had a large portion of his large intestinal tract removed in 2021 due to severe swelling. As a teenager, the Pope had a part of his lung removed. He also relies on mobility aids because of knee and sciatic pain. The risks of an infection in the bronchial tube are increased by these factors.

Maor Sauler, specialist in critical and pulmonary care at Yale School of Medicine noted the seriousness of the situation, given Pope Francis’ age and his existing medical conditions.

Bronchitis & Respiratory Diseases: What you need to Know

The bronchial tubes are affected by bronchitis. They carry the air from and to the lungs. Coughing, production of mucus, wheezing or shortness in breath can be symptoms. Bronchitis is usually manageable for healthy people, but it can be dangerous to elderly individuals or those who have pre-existing medical conditions.

Detail of Pope Francis’ recent health condition

Pope Francis, despite a busy schedule, insisted that he complete his morning audience on Friday – even though he was experiencing respiratory difficulties. He was then admitted in “fair condition” to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital.

During his hospitalization, several events including the general audience weekly had to be cancelled. The rest of his calendar is clear through the month of February, to give him time for recovery and recuperation. Doctors prescribed absolute rest after diagnosing a respiratory infection. The medical care of a polymicrobial infection involving multiple pathogens is very important.

Matteo Bruni, the Vatican’s spokesman, reported that Pope Francis is stable, has had breakfast and is reading newspapers, after spending a peaceful night at the hospital. His fever also appears to be gone.

Gabriel Romanelli reports that Pope Francis maintains daily contact with Catholic Churches in Gaza. It shows Pope Francis’ continued attention to global issues.

According to reports, since October 20, 2023 when the Israel-Hamas War began, Pope Francis has called Romanelli daily in order to show his concern for those in distress.

Pope Francis receives prayers from a number of different groups. These include Nigerian nuns as well as Christian congregations based in the United States. It is reported that he was deeply touched by the messages, prayers, and widespread support received.
