Israel

Israel‘s Foreign Ministry has made a public statement that, amid rising regional tensions and international scrutiny on Iran‘s nuclear ambitions; he believes a “reliable option” is necessary to prevent Iran from becoming able to produce nuclear weapons. As the United States under Trump intensifies their pressure on Iran, speculations about an Israeli military intervention are increasing.

What It Means

This comment is significant because of the increasing concern over Iran’s nuclear programme. Israel has been rumored to be preparing a preemptive attack on Iranian nuclear sites. The increased U.S. activity in the Middle East and Iran’s military exercises are causing a state of tension.

Iran’s petroleum sector has suffered a significant impact as a result of targeted economic sanctions. Trump may have expressed a preference to a diplomatic settlement of the Iranian nuclear question, but he’s always emphasized that Iran cannot be permitted to build nuclear weapons. Iran, on the other hand, maintains its nuclear program is solely for peaceful purposes such as medical research and energy production.

Sa’ar said that an Iran with nuclear weapons could spark a race to the nuclear bomb in the Middle East and destabilize the region. Iran, said Sa’ar, has produced enough enriched Uranium to make “a couple bombs”. Israel’s nuclear arsenal is widely thought to exist, although they have a nuclear-ambiguity policy.

Recently released reports by the International Atomic Energy Agency. Associated PressIran is increasing its production of weapons-grade uranium. Iran had 605.8 lbs of 60 percent enriched uranium on hand as of the 8th of February, an increase of 203.9 lbs from November. The level of enrichment required to produce weapons-grade uranium is 90 percent.

Iran consistently rejects direct negotiations with United States when under pressure. According to the Iranian news agency IRNA, Abbas Araghchi, Iranian foreign minister, said that Iran will not enter into negotiations if it is threatened, sanctioned, or under external pressure.

The People Say

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar: I think that if we want to prevent the Iranian nuclear program from being weaponized before it is, then a military solution should be considered.”

Abbas Araghchi, Iranian Foreign Minister Our positions will be coordinated with those of our friends from Russia and China on the nucleus issue. Iran is very clear about its position in the nuclear talks: we will not negotiate with threats, pressure or sanctions.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov: We are confident that the diplomatic resources available haven’t been fully utilized and shouldn’t be ignored. It is important to use them effectively without threatening or hinting at military solutions.

The Next Step

Israel’s military attack on Iranian nuclear sites remains possible despite the United States preference for diplomatic means. Iranian forces are reported to be on high alert, following past events where alleged Israeli air strikes allegedly damaged Iranian defenses and associated military posts. It is unlikely that military operations against Iran’s well-defended and hidden nuclear program could be successful.
