China Reacts to US Military Expansion in Pacific

China‘s warning that the Asia-Pacific must not be a “chessboard geopolitical battle” is a stark statement, especially with the United States increasing its military presence. The growing tensions between the United States and China are reflected in this statement.

There has been no response from the U.S. State Department to these requests.

What It Means

China calls the Indo-Pacific, which the United States considers its “priority theatre of operations,” as it is the region that the United States Military places as their top priority. In order to achieve this designation, the United States will be deploying high-tech military assets such as nuclear submarines and aircraft carriers in the area.

Pentagon officials have identified China both as a ‘pacing threat’ and a ‘pacing challenge” starting in 2020. Since 2020, the Pentagon has identified China as both a “pacing threat” and a “pacing challenge.”

Guo JiakunAs a result of concerns raised by a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, an agreement to end the conflict between Russia and Ukraine could allow the United States military to focus more on Asia. This would free up resources in that region.

The Chinese spokesperson stated that “we believe the Asia-Pacific region is an excellent example of growth.” China hopes to establish a lasting peace in Europe, as well as establishing a “balanced and sustainable security structure” in that region.

In the “Pivot to Asia”, a strategy initiated by the Obama administration to combat perceived Chinese threats, U.S. military, economic and diplomatic resources were strategically reallocated to Asia. Biden’s administration, since then, has modernized and revitalized the Indo-Pacific Strategy. It further cements the U.S.’ commitment to this region. The strategy includes strengthening alliances, increasing the US military’s presence in the region, deepening economic cooperation, and promoting democracy.

Chinese Foreign Ministry comments follow U.S. Defense secretary Pete Hegseths’ address to the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, when he urged European partners to take the initiative in European security. This would allow the U.S. the opportunity to focus on other threats.

Hegseth stressed that the Pentagon is focused on strategic issues.

In a January phone call with Donald Trump, then the U.S. president, Xi Jinping said that “Confrontation or conflict is not an option” for both countries. He stressed the need to respect China’s interests and the Taiwan problem.

See what people are saying

U.S. Secretary Of Defense Pete Hegseth Remarks made in Brussels, February 12, 2019 Deterrence cannot fail, for all of us. “Deterrence can’t fail for our sakes.”

Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun made the following statement at the Shangri-La Dialogue, Singapore June 2, 2024. We will not let hegemony or power politics harm the Asia-Pacific. Geopolitical conflicts or wars – whether cold, hot, or geopolitical – will never be allowed in the Asia-Pacific. We will not allow any nation or force to cause war and chaos in the Asia-Pacific.

The Next Step

In the future, it is still unclear to what extent the U.S. may reallocate military resources away from Europe and towards the Indo-Pacific after a possible solution in Ukraine. United States consistently expressed concerns over China’s treatment of Taiwan. It also reaffirmed its commitment to Taiwan and the US’ security partnership. Taiwan must receive all the support it needs to remain self-sufficient.
