The resurfacing of a document from the 1950s that outlines the strict, appearance-based requirements to become a flight attendant is sparking spirited discussion on the internet. The original post, shared by Reddit on the site, highlights the old standards of Chicago and Southern Air Lines. C&S was a former company that merged later with Delta Air Lines.
In the document titled, “Qualifications For Stewardess” are listed 19 different requirements. These qualifications were based on physical characteristics, such as “slender” legs, “good hands”, “nice figure”, a height of between 5’2 and 5’5″, and weight from 100-120 pounds. In addition, the applicants should have “good eye sight (no prescription glasses)” and a “natural colour to their hair.” Also, the single status and being unengaged was required.
In addition to physical appearance, the airline also required that candidates possess specific education backgrounds. It demanded at least four college years or two college years supplemented by a minimum of two business years.
Qualities were also based on personality. The ideal candidate was expected to be able to “conduct a lively discussion,” have a “willingness and eagerness to please” attitude, and keep a calm temper to avoid “being provoked by passengers’ demands.” This historical requirement is in sharp contrast to modern airline priorities.
What is the role of flight attendants changing?
Airlines have historically hired nurses initially as flight attendants to ensure passenger comfort. They were also concerned with airsickness. The medical knowledge they had gave them a certain level of confidence. Their medical training and personality development helped them calm passengers.
Flight attendant uniforms have played an important role in promoting airline brands since the mid-20th Century. Early uniforms were often inspired by military style. During the 1950s & 1960s uniforms became more glamorous & feminine, created often by fashion designers. The 1970s brought a move towards brighter colours and bolder designs. The modern airline uniforms are designed to be practical and comfortable, allowing flight attendants to meet their demanding schedules.
Modern Flight Attendant Employment Outlook
According to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the employment outlook for flight attendants continues to be positive. There is a 10 percent projected increase in growth between 2023-2033. This is a growth that exceeds all other occupations. BLS expects to see approximately 19,500 jobs opening each year in the coming decade. These are largely due to career and retirement changes. U.S. News & World Report regularly ranks flight attendants as one of the most satisfying jobs.
It is time to move away from discriminatory practices
Industry has seen a dramatic transformation. The industry has undergone a significant transformation. Changes reflect the broader shift in society towards equality and inclusivity.
Airlines today place more emphasis on skills like customer service, adaptability, safety and safety than physical appearance. Although flight attendants must still maintain a professional image and receive rigorous training, restrictions on height and weight have been removed. Focus has now shifted from ensuring safety to providing excellent customer service.
