NBA’s Next Face: Who Will Replace LeBron James?

LeBron James has represented the NBA in Los Angeles for more than two decades. In his 22nd year, the question of who will take over as the new face of professional basketball after James has retired is inevitable. Many believe that an American born player should be the next face of the league, but the influx in international talent is adding another layer.

Below is a list of possible candidates for the NBA’s next “face”:

Honorable mentions: Giannis Anetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks, and Nikola Jokic of the Denver Nuggets

Both Giannis Antetokounmpo (the “Greek freak”) and Nikola Jokic (the Denver Nuggets Serbian sensation, two-time NBA’s MVP) are dominating forces. However, both are over 30. It is not uncommon for the league to look at younger players as its future.

5. Zion Williamson New Orleans Pelicans

Zion Williamson is a player with unquestionable potential. The hype surrounding his arrival at Duke University was similar to that of LeBron James. Injury and fitness concerns, however, have slowed his progression. Williamson, however, could become a top contender even if he is unable to overcome his obstacles and show off his dominance consistently.

4. Jayson Tatum, Boston Celtics

Jayson Tatum plays for the Boston Celtics and has the talent to do so. Tatum, despite being recognized as a gifted player by many fans, struggles to make a connection with some of them. Tatum’s ability to consistently lead the Celtics into the postseason could cement his claim. However, some people perceive him lacking in authenticity and this hinders his appeal.

3. Luka Dončić, Dallas Mavericks

Luka Dončić, the Dallas Mavericks’ Slovenian superstar, is a generational talent. Dončić, a perennial MVP candidate, boasts exceptional court vision, scoring prowess, and playmaking abilities. He will be in the running for NBA’s face because of his captivating performances.

2. Shai Gillian-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder

Shai Gillian-Alexander, of the Oklahoma City Thunder, has risen to be considered for MVP. His remarkable growth in leadership skills and his tenacity have helped him achieve this. Although he is Canadian, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s undeniable skills and confidence will help him to surpass geographical borders and be the face of basketball.

1. Anthony Edwards Minnesota Timberwolves

Anthony Edwards from the Minnesota Timberwolves is a strong candidate. Edwards has the perfect combination of leadership, charisma and talent to be the next NBA president. Fans love his on-court energy and charisma, which makes him the perfect choice to be the NBA’s representative of tomorrow. The NBA’s fan base may be looking for an American-born superstar, and “Ant-Man”, who is a native of the United States, appears to be ready.
