The Toronto Blue Jays have shifted their attention to the security of key players after the unsuccessful acquisition attempt by the team to secure outfielder Juan Soto. This was last December. Blue Jays must decide whether to extend contracts for Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Bo Bichette or Daulton Varsho.
Keegan Matthews of MLB.com reported that the Blue Jays and shortstop Bo Bichette have not yet begun discussions about a new contract. Bichette expressed his wish to stay in Toronto for the long term. He will become eligible for free agent after this year. Bichette, who will be eligible for free agency after this season, expressed his desire to remain in Toronto long-term.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr., meanwhile, has set a February 18th deadline to extend his contract. Guerrero Jr. rejected an initial Blue Jays offer of $340 million, which he deemed insufficient. The organization is keen to secure Guerrero Jr., the four-time All-Star son of Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero Sr.
The Blue Jays’ priority in negotiations is logical given Guerrero Jr.’s imminent deadline and the potential of a larger salary demand. The Blue Jays would be better off securing Guerrero Jr.’s commitment before discussing extension negotiations with other players.
Bo Bichette has proven himself to be a reliable performer at age 26. His.290 career average, 93 home runs and 56 stolen bases have led him to a 343 RBIs total since his 2019 debut. Both his defensive and offensive abilities make him an asset for the Blue Jays.
Blue Jays also want to keep Daulton Vashro for a long time. Ross Atkins publicly stated his desire to extend Varsho’s deal before it reaches the free-agent market. Varsho is 28 years old and a Gold Glove Award winner in center field. He’s known for having exemplary defense. Varsho’s defensive contributions resulted in a 5.0 bWAR last year, despite his.214 average. This solidified his position as one of the best outfielders.
Toronto Blue Jays will have to make important decisions over the next few weeks in order to ensure the futures of Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette, as well as Gold Glove Outfielder Daulton Varsho. These extensions are crucial to the Blue Jays and their ability to compete in the American League East in years ahead.
