Donald Trump made a controversial statement at a recent press conference. He claimed that Kyiv was responsible for the continuing conflict between Russia, Ukraine and Belarus.
Trump told reporters, when he was describing his possible peace talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin that Ukraine’s involvement at the negotiating table wasn’t necessary. Trump said that Ukraine should have ended. [the war] You can expect to see results in about three years. It was a bad idea to start it. “You could have made an agreement.” Trump explains his perspective of the origins of war and its potential resolution in this comment.

Understanding the Russia-Ukraine conflict
The conflict that began on February 24, 2003, with Russia’s invasion in Ukraine has now become the most deadly since World War II. The conflict has caused significant casualties on both sides and the destruction of military hardware.
The Diplomatic Initiatives
Trump stated his desire to speak directly to Vladimir Putin and seek an immediate resolution to the Ukraine conflict. During the same time period, top diplomats, including Marco Rubio as Secretary of State, from the United States and Russia, met to find ways to end the conflict. Rubio stated that an agreement was reached following their meeting. This included a commitment to rehire embassy employees, form a special team for peace negotiation concerning Ukraine and strengthen economic collaboration. The fact that Ukrainian officials weren’t present during these talks is notable.
The Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky expressed concern about not being included in these crucial peace talks.
Zelensky stated during a recent Turkey visit that decisions on ending the conflict in Ukraine could not be made or conditions imposed without Ukraine. “We weren’t invited to the Russian-American gathering in Saudi Arabia. We were surprised, and many other people probably also.
NATO and leaders from Europe have warned Trump not to marginalize Europe in these crucial negotiations.
Trump, however, dismissed all of these worries. He was confident in his ability to end the Russia/Ukraine War.
“I believe I can end this war.” Trump, speaking to reporters after the U.S.-Russian officials’ meeting at Mar-a-Lago said: “I think things are going really well.”
“But today I heard, ‘Oh, well we weren’t invited.’ It’s true that you have been living there for the past three years. He added, “You’d have been better off ending it.”
The deal I would make for Ukraine would not have resulted in any deaths, nor would there have been any destruction of city-worlds or domes. “But they did not choose to do it in that way.”
Trump, before criticizing Zelensky directly, also attacked Joe Biden for his handling of the conflict, claiming that he “allowed the war to continue that shouldn’t have even occurred, even without United States.”
Trump’s desire to bring an end the Russia/Ukraine War has been stated repeatedly. However, the remarks made both by Trump and his own administration has raised concern among lawmakers and leaders.
Pete Hegseth has recently stated that Ukraine is unlikely to achieve NATO membership or regain the borders it had before 2014. This represents significant gains that Russia could make in any settlement.
Reactions and perspectives
U.S. State Department Spokesperson Tamara Bruce made the following statement: The United States is trying to unite countries by using their strength to achieve peace. “President Trump is the sole leader who has the power to convince Ukraine and Russia that they must agree.”
Trump remarked on the role of Ukraine in peace negotiations when asked: I think that they need to find peace. “I think that they must make peace. Their people are dying. I told them that it was a bad war and they should make peace. It’s exactly what I believe.”
The retired Lieutenant General Keith Kellogg commented on the European involvement. “I think that’s not going to happen … There was a lot of people at the table that really had no ability to execute some kind of peace process and failed miserably. “We won’t go that route.”
Zelensky has posted to X (formerly Twitter). “Europe, and the rest of the world, must be more prepared to face such evils and protect themselves from them. It is necessary to have a united, strong foreign policy, and put pressure on Putin who began this war, and now wants it spread globally. We can bring an end to this war by working with Europe, America, and our other partners.
Future developments and diplomatic engagements
Zelensky’s visit to Saudi Arabia is set for 10 March. Ukraine’s diplomatic strategy is likely to dominate the discussions. Discussions will include the potential role of this Persian Gulf country in international peace initiatives.
