Canada & US: Could the United States Become Canada’s Newest Province?

Ruby Dhalla’s unique proposal during the Liberal Party of Canada race for the leadership is a response to previous suggestions that Canada be made into a U.S. State, which was a statement often made in the past.

Dhalla’s plan, which is already attracting significant attention, was made as Justin Trudeau announced his decision to step aside, paving the way for the Canadian federal election in 2025. Candidate priorities include Canada-U.S. Relations and Canadian Sovereignty.

This is a Bold Idea: Canada as the 11th Province of the United States

Dhalla has changed the story. Instead of imagining Canada becoming a 51st state as was suggested previously, Dhalla has completely flipped it. Dhalla, who has rejected any idea of Canada merging into the U.S., said that as Prime Minister, Canada will invite the president of the United States to join Canada in the form of an 11th province, or fourth territory. This proposal aims at addressing concerns regarding Canadian sovereignty, economic independence and becoming a discussion point for potential voters of the upcoming election.

Dhalla’s Stand on Tariffs, Trade and Commerce

Beyond the headline-grabbing invitation, Dhalla addressed trade relations, a critical aspect of the Canada–United States relations. She outlined, in response to possible tariffs, a plan for a 25% reciprocal reduction of Canada’s exports to the U.S., including key resources such as natural gas, electric power, and uranium. The strategy is designed to safeguard vital Canadian industries, while also taking advantage of Canada’s important role as a supplier of essential resources which fuel the U.S. economic engine. This includes sectors such as construction and defence. Her remarks focused on the historic contribution made by Canadian aluminum and steel to American defense and infrastructure projects.

Border and Security Enhancement in Canada

Dhalla’s program also stresses border security and immigration controls. She pledged that she would implement strict immigration policies for those who enter or remain in Canada illegally. The measures include deploying additional resources, increasing the enforcement of immigration laws, investing more in military support and using advanced surveillance technology.

Leading contenders for the 2025 Liberal Party Leadership Race

The Liberal Party’s leadership is up for grabs, and several well-known figures are competing to win the job. Mark Carney is a former Bank of Canada Governor, as well as several Liberal MPs including Chrystia Freiland, Frank Baylis and Karina Gough. This contest will decide who leads the Liberal Party into the next Federal Election, dealing with key issues like the future of Canada and U.S. Relations, Trade, and Domestic Policies. Carney has been ranked as the current leader in polls, but Dhalla’s approach could resonate with those voters looking to break away from traditional politics and impact on the Liberal Party leadership election.

Face the Future: Canada’s Priorities

Dhalla’s main message is to secure Canada’s economic stability, protect its interests and put the country’s needs first. Dhalla wants to portray herself as an international leader that will defend Canada and its economic stability. It remains to be determined whether or not her ambitious proposals gain traction in the Liberal Leadership race and change the political landscape.

It is expected that the Canadian federal elections will take place in 2025. However, an election can be called earlier. Candidates like Dhalla are vying for the leadership of Canada and presenting their future visions. The next few months will be critical.
