Winter Storm: Snowfall Warnings Across 6 States

The <a href="https://247newslive.com/tag/national-weather-service/”>National Weather Service issued winter weather warnings early this week for several states. Some areas of the Western United States are bracing themselves for heavy snowfall. We’ll break these systems down into their key features and possible impacts.

What it means: Winter weather impacts

Winter weather can be very challenging. Temperatures below freezing can pose a serious threat to vulnerable groups, such as infants, elderly people, or those who are homeless. Hypothermia can result from these conditions. Winter storms may also disrupt your daily routine by causing power failures due to accumulation of heavy snow and ice on the power lines. The hazardous road conditions caused by snow and ice may also increase accidents and cause travel delays.

The NWS issued two types of alerts on Monday morning:

  • Winter Storm Warnings The warnings are a sign that “an important combination of dangerous winter weather will occur or be imminent.” The warnings indicate that “a significant combination of hazardous winter weather is occurring or imminent.”

The following areas are included in these alerts:

It was predicted that the most severe snowfall would occur Monday night and Tuesday morning. The snowfall rate could even reach one inch every hour. Travel could be difficult because of the heavy snow, warned NWS. A winter storm in Southern Washington Cascades could produce up to 19″ of snow.

In lower elevations there was a range of 7 to 14 inch snowfall, while 18 to 28 inches could be expected in higher elevations. NWS warned that traveling could be difficult because of falling and blowing flakes, especially over mountain passes.
  • Montana: Winter weather advisories were in place for the northeastern Montana region, as moderate snowfalls would cause “inconveniences” to everyday activities. NWS reported that the commute on Monday could be affected. The NWS noted that the commute on Monday morning could be affected.
