Trump Approval Rating Dips: New Poll Shows Fading Support

Recent data from The Economist/YouGov suggests that President Donald Trump may be experiencing a shift in his job approval rating. This is a measure he’s always closely monitored.

What is the significance of presidential approval ratings?

An approval rating is an important indicator of how the public feels about a particular president. Although President Trump started his term in office with relatively favorable ratings, it is important to maintain this level of support for him to advance his agenda and demonstrate political strength. He’s always emphasized the positive results of polls, particularly on platforms like X.com (formerly Twitter), while criticizing polls which reflect poorly on his performance.

Recent Polling Results: An In-Depth Look

According to 538’s polling aggregater, as of Wednesday President Trump had a positive net approval rating of 3,3%. 48.9% approved of his performance, while 45.6% did not. The Economist/YouGov released a poll the next day that showed a slight drop in overall approval.

In the Economist/YouGov survey, which was conducted from February 9th to 11th, adult U.S. citizen were surveyed. They gave a rating of 46% approval and 48% disapproval. The first time that President Trump has seen his disapproval exceed his approval since his inauguration is this poll. The margin of error for the poll is 3.4%.

Previous Economist/YouGov Polls revealed the following results:

  • On February 2nd-4th, there was 46% approval and 44% disapproval (within a margin of error of 3.2%).
  • The 26th to 28th of January: 49 percent approval and 43 disapproval (within a margin error of 3.2%).

In the analysis of the Economist/YouGov poll accompanying its most recent survey, it was stated that “the surge in popularity” which President Trump experienced initially has “faded.”

A survey conducted by adult citizens between January 19th to 21st found that President Trump’s favorable rating was 49%, while his unfavorable rating was 48%. The margin of error for the polling of adults is 3.2%.

Before that poll, conducted from January 12th to 14th, showed 45% of adult Americans rated President Trump favorably compared with 51% not favorable. The margin of error for the poll was 3.6%.

Reactions at the polls

The changing poll results have provoked a variety of responses.

Democratic Congressman Eric Swalwell of California commented sarcastically on X (formerly Twitter), “*Trump’s approval rating **In Russia” suggesting potentially stronger favorability abroad.

In a recent video posted by Rapid Response 47, the team of President Trump that is responsible for X’s news channel, Trump attributed his apparent high approval rating to “common sense”. This included issues such as “removing men from women’s sport” and securing our border.

President Trump stated, “I have high approval ratings because… I’m using common sense. Whether it’s getting men out of women’s sports… To me it’s all common sense, who wants an open border? What happens when prisons spill over into our country? Where prisoners are let into our country, many of whom are murderers… and they’re now roaming our country. Who would want that? It’s terrible.”
