Recent US Aviation Incidents Raise Concerns
Recently, the United States experienced a series of aviation accidents that raised safety concerns. In just 12 days starting on January 29, 2025 the United States reported four major aviation accidents that resulted tragically in 85 deaths. The incidents end a long time without major US airliner accidents since 2009. They also put the spotlight on safety protocol in aviation.
Navy EA-18G Growler Fighter Jet Plunges into San Diego Bay
A US Navy EA-18G Growler electronic warfare fighter plane with two seats crashed in San Diego Bay on February 12, 2025. Around 10:16 local time, the incident took place. The aircraft was seen in social media videos rapidly descending and then hitting the water.
Brandon Viets was the captain on this sportfishing vessel. PremierThe plane stayed airborne for several moments before it crashed. Both pilots were able to successfully deploy their parachutes and make an ejection.
The recordings from the live webcam show individuals on board. Premier Reporting the ejection soon after takeoff, at around 10:14 am. The report said, “They are in the water.” The report later confirmed that both pilots had been safely accounted for and were on board. A Customs and Border Protection ship eventually transferred the pilots.
Incidences of recent aviation incidents in early 2025
- February 29 The collision between a passenger aircraft and a helicopter of the US military in Washington, D.C., resulted in 67 deaths (64 passengers + three crew).
- February 31 Seven people were killed in a medical plane crash that occurred near Philadelphia.
- Feb. 6: Bering Air Flight 445, en route Unalakleet-Nome (Alaska), disappeared just before it was expected to arrive. The wreckage, which was found quickly, did not contain any survivors.
- The 10th of February is a day to celebrate. At Scottsdale Airport in Arizona an aircraft went off the runway, colliding into a plane that was parked. One fatality resulted.
Reports from Eyewitnesses and Reactions
Frank Ursitti is the General Manager of H&M Landing which owns this rescue boat. He commended Captain Brandon Viets for the professionalism he displayed in his quick response to ensure the pilots safety.
Viets said, “All that I saw was a 70-80 foot plume of mud, water, and muck.”
Investigating Environmental Concerns
A cause-and-effect investigation of the EA-18G Growler accident is underway. Fuel spillage could also be contained by containing the aircraft submerged in San Diego Bay.
