The White House published the executive order, officially titled “Implementing the President’s ‘Department of Government Efficiency’ Cost Efficiency Initiative,” on Wednesday. This executive order requires that the heads of federal departments and agencies work with their “DOGE Team Leaders”, who monitor those agencies. In a timeframe of 30 days, the agencies are required to justify existing grants and contracts.
In the order it is stated that, “Each Agency Director, working with their DOGE Team Leads, will review existing covered grants and contracts. If appropriate, they may terminate them or modify them (including by renegotiating) to lower overall Federal expenditures or reallocate funds to improve efficiency or advance my Administration’s policies.” It is possible that a new wave of contracts will be renegotiated or terminated.
This initiative focuses on “waste and fraud” and specifically targets these issues. The heads of the agencies must also provide “written reasons for each payment”, detailing how federal funds are used to fund travel, conferences and non-essential events.
