Disney Adds Christian Character After Controversy

Disney is introducing an openly Christian character in its Pixar animated series, *Win or Lose*, following reports of a transgender storyline being removed. The move coincides with a perceived shift in culture towards conservativism and the start of President Donald Trump’s second term.

Contextual and Background

Disney’s creative choices come in response to Trump who previously criticized the company for being “woke.” Disney ABC News reached a settlement with a large defamation suit. His allies and the former president have made vocal criticisms of diverse casting choices that are aligned to diversity, equality, and inclusion policies implemented by Disney. It is believed that the culture wars around LGBTQ+ issues have tempered its attitude towards inclusion.

What does “Win or lose” mean?

*Win or Lose* marks Pixar’s first original long-form animated series. This show gives a look at the Pickles middle school softball squad as they prepare for their championship.

Each episode of *Win or Lose* is dedicated to a different character, exploring their life beyond the softball field. The topics range from middle school children’s everyday struggles, helicopter parents who are overly involved, to a love-sick umpire. The show premiered on Disney+ February 19, 2025.

Laurie, a Christian-friendly character is introduced in the series’ premiere. Laurie mentions in her first scene that she is a Christian, and has an angel-shaped cutout hanging on the wall of her bedroom.

Transgender Storyline Omission

Prior to the release of *Win or Lose*, *Deadline* reported that Disney had cut a few lines of dialogue referencing a character’s gender identity.

Disney’s statement confirms the removal and emphasizes that it recognizes many parents prefer discussing certain topics directly with children in their own way. This is consistent with Disney’s approach to animated programming geared towards younger audiences.

The Historical Context for Religious Representation In Disney

The introduction of Laurie marks the first openly Christian character in a Disney film since 2007’s *Bridge to Terabithia*. This movie featured two young actors, Jesse Aarons(Josh Hutcherson), and Leslie Burke(AnnaSophia Robb), attending church and discussing religion.

Reactions to Social Commentary

The decisions surrounding *Win or Lose* have sparked discussion online.

**Mark Mitchell of Rasmussen Reports on X:** “Openly gay out. “Openly Christian in!”

**Social Media User on X:** “Again f*** Disney for removing the trans storyline from WIN OR LOSE, but so far it’s a great show.”

**Social Media User on X:** “Another week, another two incredible *Win or Lose* episodes. They do a great job of showing both parent and child perspectives and struggles. The animation, the story, the voice acting, the music… it’s all PERFECT. “The team that created this show are just brilliant.”

Look Ahead at the Future of Win or lose

New episodes of *Win or Lose* are released weekly through March 12. There has not been any announcement about the second season.

This series is attracting a broad audience because of its nuanced portrayal if adolescent and family life.
