Sephora Makeup Testers: Why You Should Avoid Them

The viral TikTok videos are causing people to talk about the dangers of makeup testers in store. Jessica Ebraheim from Ohio shared her story after she developed a chronic eye infection that was possibly caused by an eyeliner test sample shared at Sephora.

Ebraheim recalled using Dior’s brown eyeliner test after thoroughly sanitizing the tester with alcohol. She also used a disposable application. Two days after taking these precautions she discovered a small stye on her eye. It quickly worsened.

It was an important PSA.

Different reactions. TikTok’s users have reacted differently. Some expressed their shock while others said that they avoided testers out of concern for contamination. Another user questioned whether lipstick testers should be used. Jessica was not alone. One user sympathized with Jessica and said, “Y’all, it’s an innocent mistake. Some of us are just trying to match a color.”

In reality, the use of makeup testers by public retailers can cause serious health problems due to contamination. Scientists have repeatedly shown that makeup test tubes can harbour harmful bacteria including Staphylococcusaureus (a common cause of styes or skin infections), E.coli, mold, and yeast. Double-dipping or applying testers straight to the skin are two examples of poor hygiene.

Although stores attempt to disinfect testers using alcohol, it is not foolproof. Alcohol may reduce bacterial loads, but it does not guarantee the complete removal of pathogens. Surface cleaning is insufficient to eliminate all pathogens.

Testing Makeup in a Safer Environment

You can still sample your makeup without buying it.

  • Use the testers on your back instead of your cheek.
  • Prioritize disposable applicators for single use.
  • Before testing, thoroughly wipe down the product using alcohol.
  • Choose individually-wrapped makeup samples when possible.

Ebraheim said, “I just wanted to tell someone my experience in case anyone didn’t already know.” Her eye infection is now gone. “I was pleasantly surprised by the reactions of others and their comments, which said that people already knew what to do. Was also pleased to be surprised by those who offered me support and advice.
