Cat Steals New Mom’s Back Sleeping Spot

Pregnancy and the birth of a baby can cause unexpected changes in both parents as well as their pet. Consider, for example, the tabby cat that found it increasingly difficult to nap in her favorite spot as her owner’s pregnancy progressed.

A cat companion became accustomed to lying comfortably on its owner’s stomach. However, the changes in pregnancy disrupted this routine. The owner, who had been waiting for what seemed an eternity, gave birth to her baby just one week earlier, marking the beginning of the end.

The photo of the cat, who is utterly happy, continuing to nap on its owner’s belly, has been a hit online. It received over 9,300 votes on Reddit. This caption is perfect for the scene: “Our kitty is thrilled to be back in her favorite place.”

As the pregnancy advances, doctors, such as those at The American College of Obstetricians, and Gynecologists advise that prolonged lying on one’s back is not recommended. As the weight of the uterus increases, it can put pressure on your spine and back muscles. In the second or third trimester, the position may also cause the inferior vena, an important blood vessel, to be compressed. It is responsible for transporting the blood from the heart into the uterus. The pregnant woman may feel dizzy as a result of this compression, and the blood supply to her developing child could be reduced.

Cats are known for sleeping in their owner’s arms. This is a good idea for humans, but can be a problem for cats. Catster blog is a vet-approved website that offers insights into this cat behavior.

  1. Cats are attracted to warmth – Cats are instinctively drawn to sources of warmth, be it a sunbeam filtering through a window, a warm laptop, or the inviting heat radiating from your chest. The warmth of your body makes it an ideal place for cats to nap.
  2. Comfortable and stable for cats – Cats typically value stability while they rest and sleep. Sitting up might be too uncomfortable for them. It is a comfortable, dependable and still position to lie down.
  3. Cats and Humans Share a Bond of Affection – Some cats simply derive pleasure from physical closeness with their human companions. Your cat may view chest sleeping as a time of quality bonding, and a sign that you have a strong connection. You will need to be prepared to let your cat fully relax.
  4. Cats and Safety – Innately, cats seek out environments that promote a sense of security and safety. You, their human protector, offer a mixture of warmth and familiar scents. The perfect spot for peaceful cat napping.
  5. Territorial behavior in cats within multi-cat households – In homes where multiple cats reside, one cat may strategically claim certain spots, such as your chest, as their exclusive territory. By lying down on you, they mark your body with their scent and send a subliminal message to all the cats of the home: This human is mine!

Reddit users have responded with a variety of funny reactions to the viral post, showing a lighter side to pet owner dynamics.

The user said, in a playful way: “Nine-months of perceived betrayal but everything is immediately forgiven.”

Another user shared a relatable sentiment: “My cat sleeps between my legs specifically to act as a pregnancy prevention system…apparently to make sure I don’t end up like your wife.”

A third user commented: “This scene is so sweet!” This added to the atmosphere of peace and harmony. They both look so relaxed and happy, snuggling up to each other.
