Madame Web Worst Movie Award

# “Madame Web’ Sweeps The Razzies”: A Critic Debacle For Superhero Cinema

This year, superhero films, which are constantly seeking approval from critics, were faced with another challenge at the Razzie Awards. And it wasn’t a pleasant one. Sony‘s “Madame Web,” their latest entry into the Spider-Man universe adjacent to Sony, became an unexpected Razzies favorite, but not one that would elevate the genre. It won the Worst Picture Award.

It was surprising to see so many contenders for the Worst Picture award. “Madame Web” triumphed over formidable “failures,” including the much-maligned video game adaptation “Borderlands”, along with the anticipated-but-divisive sequel “Joker: Folie à Deux” and Francis Ford Coppola’s ambitious yet troubled “Megalopolis”. The low-quality “Madame Web” was even worse than the controversial biographical drama, “Reagan”.

The shame didn’t stop there. Dakota Johnson’s portrayal of “Madame Web”, the film’s titular character, was also recognized as the Worst Actress. Razzies or the 44th Golden Raspberry Awards seemed to target comic book films and superhero movies.

Beyond “Madame Web” and “Joker: Folie à Deux,” both a remake of “The Crow” and “Kraven the Hunter” received multiple nominations, further tarnishing the reputation of superhero cinema, and comic book movies in general, based on comic book properties.

In February “Madame Web”, which was released to mixed reviews, struggled at the box-office. Sony was almost doomed to fail in their ambitions for a successful live-action Spider-Verse. Sony reportedly scaled down their plans for an interconnected world after “Kraven the Hunter,” which was reported to have echoed the failings of “Madame Web,” and “Morbius.”

Sony continues to make the best use of the Spider-Man characters rights. The “Venom’ series and animated “Spider-Verse films” are the highlights. The “Spider-Man” films “Into the Spider-Verse”, “Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse”, as well as the “Venom” series, have received both commercial and critical acclaim. They demonstrate huge potential.

Even though they have received mixed reactions from critics and audiences alike, “Venom’ movies continue to resonate with them, making it a more financially viable superhero. The 2018 “Venom’s” gross was an astounding $856 million. The sequels haven’t reached that high, however “Venom: The Last Dance”, which earned $479m, has made $507m.

“Madame Web” stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Web, showcasing her clairvoyant abilities while supported by Sydney Sweeney as Julia Cornwall (Spider-Woman), Celeste O’Connor as Mattie Franklin (another Spider-Woman), and Isabela Merced as Anya Corazon (Spider-Girl, now Araña). Ezekiel SIMS (played Tahar Rahim) is the villain. The four women have to unite and fight him. Sims’s visions are haunted by the idea that the women would play a crucial role in the end of his life. So he uses a Spider-Man-like costume to try and hunt down these women.

Netflix is now streaming “Madame Web”, despite the Razzies’ recommendation and the overwhelming consensus of critics.
