Marvel lovers have been busy brainstorming ever since the debut of the trailer. Here are some of our favorite theories regarding Malkovich’s role in the film.

John Malkovich in The Fantastic Four
DISNEY

Ivan Kragoff – the Red Ghost

A popular and early theory, fuelled by Malkovich’s hair, suggested that he was playing Ivan Kragoff. Also known as Red Ghost. This Soviet mad-scientist first appeared in the 1963 issue of “Fantastic Four”, #13. Red Ghost has intangibility and invisible powers. He uses his Super-Apes, which are enhanced versions of himself.

Nathaniel Richards – The Time Traveling Dad

Malkovich may also be embodying Nathaniel Richards. This is the time-traveling father to Reed Richards who is portrayed Pedro Pascal. Malkovich has a mysterious messenger-like appearance, similar to Nathaniel’s comic book portrayals, which supports this theory.

Franklin Richards – A Visit From the Future?

Although there wasn’t any explicit mention of Reed and Sue Richards powerful son (Vanessa Kirby), this doesn’t mean that he won’t be in the movie. Franklin Richards, who is known as a future version of Reed Richards’s son has visited his parents.

Philip Masters the Puppet Master, A Personal Vendetta

The Puppet master is one of the most hated villains among the Fantastic Four’s Rogue’s Gallery. This evil villain manipulates his victims with a radioactive substance. In the comics he uses his ability often to torture Ben Grimm, who is married with the daughter of the puppet master, Alicia Masters.

Simon Utrecht’s Vector and U-Foes : An Unexpected Attack

Malkovich may be Simon Utrecht – also known by the name Vector – who leads The U-Foes. The U-Foes resemble a shadow of the Fantastic Four. They have deliberately recreated their accident, which granted them their abilities, yet are not able to go back to their normal forms. Vector was introduced in Incredible Hulk #254 (1980). He has telekinetic powers, which allow him to move objects with incredible speed. Although they were originally created as a reflection, the U-Foes never met the Fantastic Four.

This theory has been supported by the fact that other actors who have not yet revealed their roles in “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” could complete the U-Foes team. Thus, the speculation about Vector being the villain of the film is a narrative line to be followed. This new adventure into the popular franchise is given unexpected depth by the introduction of unknown characters.
