Senior Dog Given Second Chance: Vet Sees Spark, Changes Owners Plan

Briton is a 12 year old senior dog who had a difficult visit to the veterinarian. Briton, a 12-year-old senior dog who had mobility issues and skin conditions that were causing his owner to believe he was nearing the end of life, went to Richmond SPCA to consult with the team.

Briton’s veterinary team recognized that despite his ailments and age, Briton had a zest for life, which convinced them he was not ready to leave. In light of this, Briton’s owner decided to give him another chance to live a comfortable and happy life by surrendering Briton to Richmond SPCA. Richmond SPCA respected owner’s wishes, knowing that pet end-of life decisions are very personal.

Briton was given the care he required immediately thanks to Richmond SPCA Cinderella Fund. This fund is dedicated to providing lifesaving and critical medical treatment for animals in need. The veterinary team treated Briton’s skin conditions, which included the removal of masses. They also consulted specialists in order to treat his suspected disc diseases and arthritis.

Briton had coordination issues, which are often called “knuckling.” He would drag his tops of paws when walking. Radiology revealed that Briton had arthritis in multiple joints and hips, as well as intervertebral Disc Disease. Treloar from Richmond SPCA explained the severity of Briton’s previous skin conditions suggest that Briton’s hair loss could be permanent.

Briton’s treatment plan involves ongoing treatments post adoption and a dog food diet aimed at achieving a healthier body weight. Briton’s goal is to lose weight to improve comfort and mobility.

Briton has shown remarkable improvements despite the difficulties. The condition of his skin has improved, as well as the boundless energy he exudes. He loves belly rubs, and the vet team is impressed with his positive attitude. Briton is believed to have suffered from flea allergy-dermatitis due to a flea infestation. His allergies improved after the fleas were controlled.

Briton’s ideal home would be one-level to help with his mobility issues. The ramp will also make it easier for Briton to get into and out of the vehicle, which makes vet visits and excursions more enjoyable. Briton currently lives with Renai who is a Richmond SPCA foster care volunteer who has a special interest in taking care of pets that are undergoing treatment.
