Lin-Manuel Miranda, the celebrated creator of *Hamilton*, and his wife Vanessa Nadal are grieving the loss of their beloved dog, Tobillo Miranda Nadal, who passed away peacefully in her sleep. Tony Award-winning Lin-Manuel Miranda shared an Instagram tribute that recalled the story of Tobillo, their beloved dog.

Vanessa Nadal encountered Tobillo on a Dominican Republic island beach. Tobillo’s fate was sealed when Nadal gave Tobillo a playful nip to her ankle. Nadal didn’t want Tobillo to leave the island. Tobillo is a Spanish word that means ankle, and it was the ideal name for their dog.
Miranda’s heartfelt Instagram posting stated: “She transformed us from a pair into a whole family.” Miranda described Tobillo lovingly as the “best writing partner anyone can ask for,” remembering walks in their neighborhood while he wrote lyrics. Tobillo grew up with the family, from initially suspicion towards their two sons Francisco (now 7 years old) and Sebastian (10 years old), to becoming a patient and eager participant in games and a recipient of any food that was dropped. Tobillo has been a source of support and love for the entire family. He was there at all their milestones.
In a 2018 interview with *Pet Lifestyle Magazine*, Lin-Manuel Miranda delved further into Tobillo’s adoption story, sharing anecdotes about their life together. Tobillo even served as an unofficial mascot for “Mary Poppins Returns”, accompanying Lin-Manuel on the set, and meeting Meryl Strreep. This is a testament of how important Tobillo has been to Lin-Manuel.
Miranda’s Instagram tribute concluded with “Thank you, Tobi, for selecting us.” It would be selfish of us to demand more time than you have given us. Enjoy the coolness of earth, food that has been dropped and long and happy walks. “I love you, and you’re always with me wherever I am.” Tobillo Miranda Nadal’s loss is felt deeply by all of the Miranda-Nadal families, but she will live on in the memories they have shared together and through her unconditional love.
