Everest the beautiful white cat was abandoned at Furkids Midtown Atlanta Center. This respected animal sanctuary is known for its no-kill policy. Deanna, who manages the shelter, shared Everest’s story on TikTok (@atlmotherofkittens), explaining she felt compelled to speak out despite typically waiting before sharing about new arrivals.
Everest was a 1-year-old cat that his owner abandoned because of excessive shedding. This fluffy friend was given up because of his fur. White cat hair is a part and parcel of being a feline. It ends up all over furniture, clothing, etc.
Cats shed to replenish their fur. This allows them to get rid of old, unhealthy hair and replace it with new healthy ones. Some breeds shed a lot more than others and this can cause human allergies. However, cat owners are used to it. Everest shed so much that his former owner couldn’t handle it.
Deanna’s video shows that Everest, upon arriving at the shelter, was traumatized. His sudden change in surroundings caused him to become withdrawn and vocalize his distress. In a tragic twist, it was discovered by the shelter that his former owner neglected the basic care of the animal, including vaccinations, neutering, and other necessary veterinary procedures.

Deanna has shared Everest’s tale on social media, and Furkids is flooded with applications for adoption. This shows the power that social media can have, as well as the compassion of animal-lovers. Everest may not be ready to go home yet as he is still adjusting to his new life in the shelter, but potential adopters can expect updates.
Deanna explained that “he was still scared” and “he is now processing what happened because a shelter has a lot noise and lots of people.”
Deanna’s mission is to find Everest the right family. She wrote in her blog that it is her “mission” to do so. “He deserves more than what he has experienced so far in life.”
