The recent speculation about the future of Los Angeles Rams‘ quarterback Matthew Stafford has been intriguing. Although trade rumors circulated, it appears that the Rams have now opened their eyes to his current market value. That could pave the way for an extension instead of a trade.

Ian Rapoport from NFL Network reported that the Rams had granted Stafford’s representative permission to speak with other NFL teams in order to evaluate his current market worth. Rapoport clarified that the move was not an official trade request. The Los Angeles Rams, along with Stafford, are looking for clarity about his value outside of the Rams, in order to help facilitate contract negotiations, and ensure his future at the Rams.

This is in contrast to earlier reports that suggested the Rams already had a trade value established for Stafford. Stafford was rumored as a first round draft pick. Mike Florio’s speculation about scenarios such as Stafford going to the New York Giants or Aaron Rodgers moving to Los Angeles Rams adds to the complexity.
Rams’ current policy of letting Stafford’s representative explore Stafford’s value suggests that they may be trying to keep Stafford in Los Angeles. The Rams have not explicitly ruled out a trade, but their actions indicate that they are actively seeking to determine his market value in order to negotiate a possible contract extension. Matthew Stafford staying in LA is a top priority.
Stafford, who will be 36 in 2024 is still a competent starting quarterback and could improve several quarterback scenarios across the league. His experience and skills could be beneficial to teams such as the New York Giants and Las Vegas Raiders. They are all reported to be looking for quarterback upgrades. The Rams may decide to make an offering if they do decide to trade Matthew Stafford.
Although the Rams didn’t put Stafford up on trade blocks, they were willing to speak about the value of his services. This shows that the Rams are open-minded to possible offers. The Rams’ primary concern appears to be determining his value in order to negotiate a contract.
Matthew Stafford showed his ability to continue performing at an elite level in 2024 NFL Season.
Los Angeles Rams were hit by injuries in 2024, but recovered to earn a place in the playoffs. Stafford led the Rams to a significant victory in the Wild Card Round over the Minnesota Vikings before losing in the Divisional Round to the Philadelphia Eagles, who won the Super Bowl.
