Snowstorm East Coast Flight Delays and Cancellations Updates

This week, a major winter storm will impact the Mid-Atlantic, causing heavy snowfall, dangerous ice conditions and widespread power failures. AccuWeather’s experienced meteorologists closely monitor the system, forecasting the worst impacts of this weather event may be felt in Southeastern Virginia and Central Maryland including the Baltimore Washington metropolitan area and parts of North Carolina.

Preparing for the following impacts is important:

  • Southeastern Virginia, parts of Maryland and the surrounding areas could experience significant snowfall. Accumulations in certain localized locations may reach up to 25″
  • Winter Storm to Impact Major Cities: The winter storm is expected to have a significant impact on major metropolitan areas, including Norfolk, Virginia, Richmond, Virginia, Raleigh, North Carolina, and Winston-Salem in North Carolina.
  • Interstate Travel Distortions: Interstates 64 and 85 and in particular Interstate 95, which is located along the I-95 Corridor, may face temporary closures while road crews and transportation departments struggle to maintain a safe driving environment and manage heavy snowfall. Plan ahead and anticipate delays.
  • Airline Delays and Flight Cancellations. Widespread delays in flights and the cancellation of flights are likely to occur as soon as this Wednesday, at airports serving Washington D.C. metro area, Baltimore region, Richmond and Norfolk. It is important that travelers closely monitor flight information and communications from airlines.
  • Icy conditions and Power Outages: The forecasters warn of widespread power outages and ice in parts of North Carolina. Residents need to be prepared for prolonged power interruptions.
  • Even in the far northern regions of New England and the Mid-Atlantic, light snowfall is possible. Residents should be alert to the possibility of slippery conditions, even if accumulations are less.
