Dixon’s tale highlights how important it is to understand a dog’s needs prior to bringing him home. Dixon was initially adopted by a family, who quickly sent him back because their home felt too small to accommodate his energy.
On January 7, Dixon’s fortunes began to turn around when he transferred to Humane Society of Broward County. This non-profit animal welfare organization is dedicated to helping animals. Cherie Wachter is the Vice President of Marketing at Humane Society of Broward County. According to her, Dixon was transferred as part of a program that helps dogs who might otherwise be neglected in shelters.
Dixon was again adopted just a few weeks later on the 29th of January. He was adopted again, but before he could get used to it, he returned. His exuberant enthusiasm and his tendency to leap were too much this time for the family who feared he could accidentally hurt their mother.
Wachter said that despite their disappointment at this second return of Dixon, the family was responsible in returning him to the shelter. It is never a good thing when an adopter returns a pet. But we would rather they bring it back to the shelter than leave him on the streets.
The shelter, determined to find Dixon a forever home for him, created a TikTok heartwarming video that showed his “heartbroken state”.

In the video caption, Dixon was described as having soulful puppy-like eyes while he watched passersby pass his kennel. He lay down next to the glass hoping for a soft touch. This post included an honest evaluation of Dixon by potential adopters.
This post said: “Dixon’s still a young puppy and needs some guidance in order to develop into the gentlemen he is meant to become.” He doesn’t have a bark and is very affectionate. His fur is soft and he knows basic commands such as sit and down. He would thrive with another pet and deserves a loving family to embrace his huge, affectionate personality.
The video was viewed over 679, 000 times. After seeing the post, an adopter came immediately to see Dixon. A potential adopter fell in love with Dixon and immediately came to meet him.
Dixon’s parents drove from Tampa to Florida four hours away after watching the video. Dixon was able to settle in nicely after they showed their love and commitment. He is being taught to swim by his new family!
Although Dixon’s tale has a happy end, Wachter wants it to serve as a warning for potential pet owners, particularly when adopting a puppy from animal shelters or humane societies in their locality. The energy level of a dog can be a key factor in finding the best fit. She said that adopting a dog is a huge responsibility. Adopters should consider their lifestyle when choosing a suitable pet for their family. It’s also a great idea to bring the whole family with you when visiting the adoption center. The size and age of your dog will determine how much daily play and exercise they require. It can sometimes help to have a friend dog with whom you play.
