Red Sox Trade Target: $10 Million Reliever to Replace Jansen

# Red Sox Eye Robert Suárez Trade After Alex Bregman Signing: Bolstering Bullpen with Padres Closer?

Following what many are calling an “A-plus” offseason highlighted by the official announcement of two-time All-Star third baseman **Alex Bregman** joining the team, the **Boston Red Sox** might not be done making moves. While the additions of former **Chicago White Sox** pitcher **Garrett Crochet**, **Los Angeles Dodgers** pitcher **Walker Buehler**, and hard-throwing reliever **Aroldis Chapman** have significantly strengthened the roster, some analysts are suggesting one more key acquisition: **San Diego Padres** closer, **Robert Suárez**.

With **Kenley Jansen** now with the **Los Angeles Angels**, the Red Sox have a void at closer. **Robert Suárez**, who saved 36 games in 42 opportunities last season, is being touted as a potential trade target to fill that role.

Jackson Roberts of SI.com suggests that acquiring **Robert Suárez** would be the “perfect bow” on the Red Sox’s offseason. He points out that **Suárez** is entering the final guaranteed year of his contract, and the **Padres** might be motivated to move him to alleviate their luxury tax concerns.

The **San Diego Padres** are reportedly looking to stay below the Competitive Balance Tax threshold. Trading **Robert Suárez**, and his $10 million salary for the 2025 season, would contribute to achieving that goal. This financial motivation could mean the **Red Sox** wouldn’t have to offer a significant package of prospects to complete the trade.

Can Dylan Cease be a part of a blockbuster trade?

Adding another layer to the speculation, Cody Williams of Fansided proposed a blockbuster deal that would bring not only **Robert Suárez** to Boston but also **Dylan Cease**, the talented right-hander who finished fourth in National League Cy Young Award voting last year. **Dylan Cease**, a 28-year-old Cy Young candidate, is considered a valuable asset. In fact, a recent survey of MLB executives by *The Athletic* identified **Dylan Cease** as the player most likely to be traded this spring.

Williams suggests the **Red Sox** could send starting pitcher **Kutter Crawford** and Gold Glove outfielder **Wilyer Abreu**, who finished sixth in American League Rookie of the Year voting in 2024, to San Diego. The deal would also include two highly-regarded prospects: outfielder **Miguel Bleis**, the Red Sox’s No. 6 prospect, and shortstop **Dorian Soto**, ranked No. The organization has 30 players.

While this would be a substantial package for Boston to give up, it would create a formidable starting rotation featuring **Garrett Crochet**, **Dylan Cease**, **Walker Buehler**, 2024 All-Star **Tanner Houck**, and either **Lucas Giolito** or **Brayan Bello**, complemented by a dominant closer in either situation. If the **Red Sox** and **Padres** were willing to make this deal, the Boston pitching staff would immediately become one of the league’s best. Adding **Robert Suárez** could be the missing piece and instantly vault them into contention.
