When San Antonio Spurs‘ young sensation Victor Wembanyama was disqualified, the focus of 2025 Skill Challenge changed from skills to controversy. The event’s spirit was violated by their strategy, which involved rapid-fire shooting, while seemingly putting speed above accuracy.

Disqualification was met with boos by the Chase Center audience, which highlighted the gap between players’ expectations and what they thought the rules were. Officials deemed that their method was not in line with the rule of having to attempt legitimate shots, despite the fact they believed it.

In the past, players were required to navigate a timed course that tested their accuracy in passing, shooting, and dribbling. The format changed in 2022 to a competition based on teams. In this year’s competition, four teams were divided into twos, with each team competing for “Challenge Points”, which are awarded across three different phases, including shooting, dribbling, and passing.

Team Cavaliers, consisting of Cleveland Cavaliers players Donovan Mitchell, and Evan Mobley won the Skills Challenge 2025. In order to claim the title, they had to demonstrate consistent performance in each of the three phases. This event was held in San Francisco, 2025.

For the first time in 2000, 2025’s NBA All-Star Weekend brought the celebrations back to Oakland and San Francisco. While the Skills Challenge was criticized, the remainder of the weekend offered a chance for basketball fans of all levels to celebrate their achievements.
